Zuccardi Concreto Malbec

Winemakers can choose to look forwards or backwards. This high altitude Malbec harks back three generations to a time before new oak, before fining and filtration. Fermented and matured in concrete vessels, the aim is to ‘undress’ the wine. And what elegance, what power! And it’s amazingly versatile with food.

Honoring His Grandfather's Legacy Through Concrete Fermentation and Ancient Techniques

Concreto is very important wine in the life of third generation owner and winemaker Sebastián Zuccardi. In his quest to pursue wines that express both place and region, Concreto looks back to his grandfather’s winemaking era. Fermentation and storage are carried out in concrete vessels without epoxy resin, to avoid the influence of aromas and flavours which do not come from the vineyard, and to amplify the texture of the wine.Zuccardi_Concreto_Malbec_2022_WBSS24_1

Getting started was a challenge but he was determined to free himself from modern winemaking ties and so deepen his confidence in the place where his family have cultivated vines for three generations. Concreto aims to “undress” the wine - enhance its expression of the place and reveal the texture that the calcareous soils of Paraje Altamira which lies within the Uco Valley. Only the most stony and calcareous plots of this high altitude vineyard (1,100m) are selected and vinified as whole bunches, just as it was done in the past.

Tasting
NOTES

Inky blue colour with a purple hue and intense depth. The nose has a moderate intensity showing purity of fruit and great elegance, its cloves and black pepper spices are well integrated into the wine. The palate has great concentration and refined balance. Long finishing opening up to profound notes of liquorice, cedar, black tea and dark chocolate. A wonderful balance of elegance and power.

Food
PAIRINGS

This unoaked wine with its excellent balance should work with casual as well as fine dining fair. Pair with Chicken Adobo in soy sauce, black peppercorns and bay leaves, or a Japanese beef sukiyaki with its distinctive sweet flavour, which would marry the vinous fruit without the distraction of oak.
