Preserving Tradition: The Birth of Vadio
Vadio is located in the village of Poutena in Bairrada, Portugal. It is a small family project founded in 2005 by winemaker Luís Patrão and his wife Eduarda Dias with the essential philosophy of conserving Bairrada’s traditional grape varieties and the production of authentic DOC Bairrada wines. This is a modest affair with three small but very distinct vineyards and an old warehouse that has been adapted in a very simple manner for the production of wine. The wines are presented in a very classic style that intends to respect the authenticity of the region and its character.
In Vale do Forno, the 9.5ha vineyard site is divided into three unique blocks, each with its own geological, soil, and climatic conditions. This diversity allows the unlocking of the full oenological potential of Bairrada. Sustainable viticulture is employed incorporating organic and some biodynamic techniques to protect regional biodiversity. These practices imbue the wines with great authenticity and character.
Rexarte: Safeguarding Authenticity
Rexarte epitomises their mission to safeguard the unadulterated expression of their terroir. Produced only in exceptional years and in limited quantities - usually not exceeding 1,300 bottles - this wine originates from a 0.3ha hillside vineyard with a northern exposure and transitional sandy to limestone soil. Yields are generally low, allowing for wines of optimal concentration, complexity, and texture.
Vinification is carried out in small vats, partially with whole bunches, hand-plunged and fermented with indigenous yeasts. After the alcoholic fermentation is complete, the wine ages in used 500l French oak barrels and is bottled after one year to preserve the fruit's purity and the vineyard’s essence.
