Crafted from local Greek varieties limnio, mavroudi and mavrotragano grown in a 2.5ha plot in the Papamola region of Epanomi southeast of Thessaloniki, Ktima Gerovassiliou Avaton 2022 underwent extended maceration and fermentation in stainless steel followed by a year in oak. The result is a smooth, red-fruited wine with a distinct savouriness that would work well with lamb.

Urged by his love, knowledge and experience in vine-growing and fine wines, Vangelis Gerovassiliou began to renovate the family vineyard and created the Ktima Gerovassiliou. Ktima Gerovassiliou is the brainchild of Vangelis Gerovassiliou. In 1981, he started reviving the family vineyard extending over 2.5 hectares in the Papamola region of Epanomi, approximately 25 km southeast of Thessaloniki. He built a sustainability‑minded, research‑driven estate focusing mainly on native grapes.

Avaton is a modern classic from Epanomi, blending limnio, mavroudi, and mavrotragano – three indigenous red grapes, with limnio documented since antiquity. After extraction and completion of alcoholic and malolactic fermentations in stainless steel, the wine rests in oak, developing dark‑fruit richness, coffee tones and gentle, polished tannins that age gracefully.

NOTES

Medium-bodied and savoury, this Greek red blend kicks off with aromas of ripe red fruit such as sour cherry, cranberry and red plum. There's also a hint of violet, sage, gunflint, black pepper and smoked bacon in the background. On the palate it's smooth and well balanced with persistent acidity, silky, slightly dusty tannins and a rich texture with hints of dried herbs and sweet spices from the oak. The finish is long and mineral.
