Made from 100% carignan grown in the oldest and most harmonious plots of Finca La Garriga in the northern Spanish region of Empordà, Perelada Garrigal Vinyes Velles 2023 was aged for seven months in French oak, resulting in a bright, red-fruited wine displaying varietal purity and herbal hints. Perelada, one of Empordà's flagship estates, has increasingly focused on site‑expressive, small‑parcel wines that highlight the region's varied geology. Garrigal Vinyes Velles comes from old vines rooted in slate-dominated soils that naturally limit vigour and produce concentrated fruit.

Perelada's work over the past decade has centred on precision farming, including selecting micro‑plots and using canopy management to moderate Empordà's warm, tramuntana‑influenced climate. The 2023 vintage is crafted with gentle extraction to preserve aromatic purity and avoid over‑structuring the old-vine fruit. Fermentation takes place in temperature‑controlled stainless steel, followed by ageing in a combination of concrete and French oak to balance freshness with subtle textural development.

The resulting wine offers a refined expression of Empordà's Mediterranean landscape – dark berry fruit, herbal lift, and a distinctive mineral edge rooted in its slate soils – while retaining the elegance and balance that characterise Perelada's new-generation premium releases.

NOTES

Red fruit is the name of the game when it comes to this old vine carignan from Empordà. The bright nose is packed with ripe strawberry, cherry jam and plum aromas, along with dried fruits like prunes and herbs such as rosemary and thyme. The palate is powerful, complex, and crammed with red and black fruit flavours wrapped around grippy tannins. It has a pleasant texture, incredible purity of fruit, and a distinct oak presence.

This carignan will stand up to a roasted squab pigeon or lamb with Mediterranean herbs, and would also pair a treat with a bitter chocolate tart topped with orange zest.
