Only bottled in exceptional years, Quinta do Crasto Tinta Roriz is made from three vineyard plots with clay-rich soils and different solar exposures: east, southeast and northwest. Capturing the essence of tinta roriz, it's a rich and voluptuous red packed with black fruits, sweet spices and Mediterranean herbs. Perfect with barbecued brisket.

Quinta do Crasto's single‑varietal tinta roriz showcases the estate's commitment to site‑specific wines from its historic vineyards overlooking the Douro. Tinta roriz has long thrived on Crasto's schist terraces, where the combination of poor soils and steep exposures yields small berries with naturally firm structure.

The estate, led by the Roquette family, has modernised significantly over the past 30 years, pairing traditional foot‑treading and gravity‑flow design with meticulous parcel selection. The 2017 vintage, a warm and concentrated year, highlights tinta roriz's savoury depth and ageing potential. Fermented in lagares for controlled extraction, it is aged predominantly in French oak to broaden texture without overwhelming varietal character. The result is a focused expression of the Douro's classical red grape – layered, structured, and reflective of the estate's long-standing pursuit of precision.

NOTES

This dynamic tinta roriz packs a punch with an exuberant nose of blackberry, plum, tobacco leaf, kalamata olive and wild Mediterranean herbs, with an earthy, flinty, minty complexity woven throughout. On the palate the oak is well integrated, offering sweet baking spice flavours of clove, star anise and coffee bean alongside intense fruit and floral flavours of blueberries, black cherries and violets. The alcohol is high but balanced out by pronounced acidity and textured tannins.

A hearty red needs meat and this robust tinta roriz would pair a treat with a traditional South African braai, barbecued brisket, or beef bourguignon.
