Beginning as an experimental project in 1995, Quinta de Soalheiro was among the first to barrel age its alvarinho in French oak for added texture and complexity. Enhancing rather than overpowering the wine, the oak element adds a new dimension to Vinho Verde, imbuing it with a creamy mouthfeel that makes it a perfect partner for fish.

Soalheiro, a pioneering estate in Melgaço, is widely regarded as one of Portugal's foremost alvarinho specialists. The Reserva 2023 represents the richer, oak‑influenced side of the Soalheiro portfolio, crafted to show the grape's depth and ageing potential.

The fruit is sourced from prime hillside vineyards that deliver concentrated, naturally balanced grapes. Fermentation takes place partly in stainless steel and partly in neutral or lightly toasted French oak barrels, followed by extended lees ageing with bâtonnage to build texture and complexity. The estate's precision viticulture – supported by Melgaço's granite soils and cooler microclimate – helps maintain alvarinho's hallmark acidity even in warmer years.

The Reserva offers layered citrus and stone‑fruit flavours allied with gentle spice and creamy structure, while remaining firmly grounded in Soalheiro's signature freshness. The 2023 edition continues to refine this style, delivering both immediacy and cellar potential.

Tasting
NOTES

Displaying alvarinho's signature brightness, this sprightly Vinho Verde sings with white flower, citrus and stone fruit aromatics. On the nose are aromas of white peach, green apple, lemon, ginger and grapefruit, which pop up again on the palate, alongside quince, mandarin and sage. Marked by its vibrant acidity, stony minerality, a creamy mouthfeel from barrel fermentation and savoury depth, the finish is impressively long, ending with a lick of salt.

This zippy number would work well with everything from langoustine ravioli in a sake beurre blanc and steamed clams with salsa verde, to grilled calamari with lemon and aioli.
