Made from the little-known encruzado grape in Portugal's Dão region, which is known for producing structured, age-worthy whites with complexity, minerality, and balance, Quinta dos Carvalhais Encruzado 2023 wears its oak treatment lightly, retaining its varietal purity while delivering a textured white with an unctuous mouthfeel bursting with orchard fruit. Enjoy it with barbecued mackerel.

Encruzado White

Quinta dos Carvalhais is a leading name in the Dão, recognised for revitalising regional varieties and elevating the area's reputation for elegant, ageworthy wines. Encruzado, the Dão's flagship white grape, is the estate's speciality – valued for its capacity to combine freshness with textural depth.

Quinta dos Carvalhais

The 2023 vintage is sourced from estate vineyards set among pine forests and granitic slopes that safeguard acidity and aromatic precision. Fermentation occurs partly in stainless steel and partly in used French oak, with lees ageing adding complexity while maintaining varietal purity.

Carvalhais' approach blends tradition with innovation, emphasising gentle handling and expressive, terroir-driven wines. Their encruzado is consistently one of the region's benchmarks, offering citrus, white flower and mineral notes supported by subtle structure. The 2023 release continues this legacy, showcasing the variety's finesse and the estate's modern identity.

Tasting
NOTES

Crafted from the encruzado grape in the Portuguese region of Dão, this elegant wine has a delicate nose featuring mineral notes of iodine, coastal herbs and sea spray alongside apricot and peach. There's also tangerine and grapefruit on the nose, and hints of white flowers. The palate has weight and texture from well-integrated oak, giving the wine an unctuous mouthfeel. Orchard fruits come through on the palate, which finishes with a big lick of salt.

Food
PAIRINGS

The saline elements of this Portuguese white make it a perfect partner for barbecued mackerel or scallops meuniere with braised leeks. Roasted rabbit roulade would also work.
